Beauty | Autumn Winter Beauty Essentials

A/W Beauty Essentials

It may be September, but apparently, the weather didn’t get the memo, well at least not until yesterday. It is raining, but it's hot muggy rain, not the sort that requires big coats and boots. However, it won’t be long until our skin and hair start showing the signs of cold weather. The constant temperature changes from outside to in, dries out our lovely locks and sun-kissed skin. That’s why it’s important that you update your beauty regime to cater for your bodies new needs.

Hair

Leave-in Conditioner

My hair is always on the dry side, years of dying and heat damage has not been too beneficial, also hair with a curl or wave in it tends to need more moisture. I have been using this Paul Mitchell Leave-in conditioner for a while with great results. I find it’s not too heavy for my fine hair, helps tackle the frizz and add shine. It’s important to find the right product for you.

Hair Oil

I apply hair oil to the ends of my hair on the last day before I wash it. Generally, by this point, my ends are starting to dry out, so adding oil and putting it in a bun or a braid, allows it to last another day and gives it much needed moisture. While usually, I use a light oil, in the winter I switch to Macadamia Oil, which usually is too oily and heavy for my hair, but is perfect for preventing winter damage. I only apply it to the ends, but if you have thicker or dryer hair, you could add it to your mid-lengths too.

Conditioning Masks

OK, so this might be overkill, but I find using a good conditioning mask once a week helps make my hair more manageable in the Winter, and adds some much-needed shine.

Skin

A Good Moisturiser

This goes without saying really – although in the Winter I like to switch over to Weleda Skin Food – this is a miracle cream. It stops your face feeling tight and makes such a difference in the appearance of the skin, leaving it soft, smooth and glowing. It might be worth adding a wrinkle cream to your regime too.

Gradual Tan

OK, this isn’t an essential unless you just always look half dead – like I do. Oh boy, do I wish I had lovely pale skin, but instead of looking like Dita on Teese or some other Ivory goddess, I look like a Zombie. I should have a lovely olive complexion due to my heritage (Italian and Iranian) but because of my anaemia I just look ill.

Exfoliator

Again, exfoliating is probably already part of your routine, whether with a product or a muslin. I find in the colder months, that I need to exfoliate a lot more regularly – the Dermalogica Daily Microfoliant is a powder that you mix with water and apply to your face. It’s great as it brightens your skin by removing dead skin cells, stimulating cell renewal and helps balance uneven pigmentation.

Cleanser and Toner

Yes you are already using some sort of cleanser, I like to use The Body Shop Vitamin E Cleanser and Toner, partly to help treat my scar, but also because vitamin e is known for its benefits for the skin – also The Body Shop Skin Care Diagnostic Tool recommended it to me as part of a tailored skin care plan.

Lip Balm

Do you remember how dry your lips get in Winter? I’ve been a devout Carmex fan for years, but I recently started using this Meraki lip balm (with an SPF15 so can be used in Summer too) it’s smooth to apply and long lasting. Not to mention it smells and tastes DIVINE.

Hand Cream

Your hands are another casualty of the Winter months, don’t let them become sore and dry – I love this Burts Bee hand cream, it’s not too greasy and absorbs quickly – great to leave on your desk at work and apply throughout the day.

Well being

Essential Oils

There are loads of benefits to starting to use Essential oils all year round – but Winter is a good time to use them to stave off illness – I have chosen Lavender as it’s great for aiding sleep, relieving muscle ache, alleviates headaches, reducing stress and anxiety, disinfect the scalp and skin, enhance blood circulation and treat respiratory problems.
