Lifestyle | Tips For Planning A Magical Backyard Wedding Reception

With the cost of hiring out a wedding venue at an all-time high, it’s no wonder that so many people are starting to hold their wedding receptions at home.

Yes, you heard me right - more and more people are hosting their wedding receptions in their back yards. Admittedly, hosting your wedding reception in your back garden may not sound as glamorous as hiring out a luxury hotel ballroom, but it will save you a lot of money.

If your wedding budget is small or you don’t want to pay for an overpriced venue and are lucky enough to have a big backyard, then there is no reason not to hold your wedding at home.

If the idea of hosting your wedding celebration in your back garden appeals to you, then make sure to have a read of this. Here are all the best tricks and ideas for planning a magical backyard wedding reception:

Think it through properly

To successfully pull off a backyard wedding reception, you will need to do a lot of planning. Before agreeing to have your reception in the backyard, make sure to think it through properly.

Ask yourself whether a backyard wedding reception is what you want, whether it will fit your wedding theme and whether there will be enough room for all your guests.

Unlike when you hire a venue to host your reception, if you have chosen to use yours or your parents back garden, you will have to do a lot of the organising yourself. Do you have time for that? Will anyone be helping you - your bridesmaids, maid of honour or mother perhaps?

Contact your catering company

Before making the final decision, get in touch with your catering company and ask how much room they will need. Give them the measurements of your garden, and ask them to let you know.

Is there enough room for all the tables and chairs you will need? Is there enough space for the catering company to work? Will there still be extra room left for dancing? These are all important questions to ask yourself.

Get your garden into shape

To ensure that the garden looks its best, you will need at least two months to get it into shape. Instead of just planting random flowers, speak to your gardener and ask them to plant flowers that match your weddings colour scheme.

If you don’t already have a gardener, it might be a good idea to hire one. Even if you only hire a gardener until after the wedding, it is important that you have someone to keep on top of your yard.

Don’t forget about the entertainment

As well as being able to fit all the catering items into it, your garden also needs to be large enough to fit the entertainment in as well. To find the perfect band for your wedding have a look online for jazz bands for hire or ask friends and co-workers for recommendations.

Whether you are hiring a live band or a DJ, it is crucial that you double check there is enough space in your garden for them and all their equipment. It is also important to make sure there is electric available for them to use if necessary.

You could also think about adding a sweet stall to your wedding. It's easy to buy wholesale wedding sweets, cute striped paper bags, miss matched sweet jars to place on a small table or cart.
