Fashion | Upcycling Tricks For Your Wardrobe

Not so long ago fashionistas would earn their status by the size of the hefty price tag on their brand new designer pieces. Today, it’s all about frugal shopping: the cheaper and older, the better!

Upcycling your wardrobe is one way to save on clothes shopping, leaving more money to step out and be a girl about town in your newly improved garments. Get your sewing machines at the ready, take a trip to the haberdashery shop and fire up your imagination.

Here are some ideas.

Button it up

The smallest change can make the biggest difference. Take a buttoned shirt, jacket or dress and choose some new buttons to replace the old ones with. Perhaps you’ll choose white round buttons against a black coat for a 60s Mod look, pearl buttons and golden knots to add a vintage touch to a tea dress or colourful buttons to brighten up a work shirt. Each button just needs a few tight stitches and voila!

Hemlines

Alter the length of your hemline to either totally transform your garment or add a bit of sass! For example, you can turn some full length trousers or jeans into a cute pair of shorts for the summertime. Be sure to stitch over the hem with your sewing machine, leave it raw and frayed if they are denim. Give a knee length skirt a night time twist by taking the hem up an inch or two, this will make you feel super confident in a pair of killer heels. You might even want to think about decorating a hemline with delicate beading or a bang on trend faux fur trim. Speaking of which...

Faux fur

There’s no need to invest in a new coat this winter, there are plenty of faux fur stoles to attach to your jacket from last year. Pick one up from the charity shop and stitch it to the collar of your coat. It looks extremely chic and will also keep your chest area nice and warm. Designers like Shrimps have made faux fur come back in a very big way. You can also wrap a stole around, give it a couple of stitches and use it as a headband for the perfect apres-ski look.

There are so many different tricks to update your wardrobe with. See what you can pick up from the charity shop, stock up on embellishments and put aside a Sunday afternoon to get cracking. It might even lead you to a little business venture.
